Na-adjectives (な形容詞)

What are Na-adjectives?

Na-adjectives (な形容詞) are adjectives that need when modifying nouns. They're also called "adjectival nouns" or "nominal adjectives."

静か (shizuka) - quiet
きれい (kirei) - beautiful, clean
便利 (benri) - convenient
元気 (genki) - energetic, healthy

Characteristics

1. Need な to Modify Nouns

静かな部屋 - quiet room
きれいな花 - beautiful flower
便利な店 - convenient store

2. Use だ/です as Copula

部屋は静かだ - The room is quiet
部屋は静かです - The room is quiet (polite)

3. Often Foreign Origin or Abstract

Many come from Chinese or describe states/qualities:

便利 (benri) - convenient
有名 (yuumei) - famous
簡単 (kantan) - simple

How to Use Na-adjectives

1. Modifying Nouns (+ な)

静かな部屋
"quiet room"

2. As Predicate (+ だ/です)

Plain:
この部屋は静かだ
"This room is quiet"

Polite:

Identifying Na-adjectives

Clues it's a Na-adjective:

  1. Doesn't end in い

    静か、便利、有名
    
  2. Ends in い but can't conjugate

    きれい、嫌い、有名
    (These don't become きれくない, きらくない)
    
  3. Foreign origin

    ハンサム (handsome)
    ロマンチック (romantic)
    
  4. Two-kanji compound

    便利、有名、安全、親切
    

Words That Trick You

End in い but are NA-adjectives:

きれい (kirei) - beautiful → きれいな花
嫌い (kirai) - dislike → 嫌いな食べ物
有名 (yuumei) - famous → 有名な人

How to tell: Try conjugating to negative

  • I-adj: 高い → 高くない ✓
  • Na-adj: きれい → きれくない ❌ (doesn't work!)
