Adjective Comparisons (より)

Comparison Overview

Japanese comparisons use より (yori) meaning "than." Unlike English, adjectives don't change form - you add より to show comparison.

A は B より 高い

Answering

Q: 犬と猫と、どちらが好きですか?
   "Which do you like, dogs or cats?"

A: 犬の方が好きです
   "I like dogs better"

A: 猫より犬の方が好きです
   "I like dogs better than cats"

の方が (no hou ga) - "more"

の方が emphasizes "the one that is more..."

Pattern

A の方が B より [adjective]

この車の方があの車より速い
"This car is faster than that car"
(emphasis on "this car")

東京の方が大阪より大きい
"Tokyo is bigger than Osaka"

Common Usage

こっちの方がいい
"This one is better"

あっちの方が安い

Use 一番 (ichiban) for superlatives:
