What is や for Lists?
や (ya) is a particle used to give examples from a larger group, meaning "and" or "such as." Unlike と which indicates a complete list, や suggests there are MORE items than what's mentioned.
English equivalents:
- "and" (non-exhaustive)
- "such as"
- "things like"
- "and so on"
Key characteristic: や implies the list is incomplete - there are other items not mentioned.

Ringo ya mikan wo katta.
"I bought apples, oranges, and such." [These and possibly other fruits]
猫や犬が好きです。
Neko ya inu ga suki desu.

Common Mistakes
Mistake 1: Using や for Complete Lists
❌ 兄や妹がいます (when you only have these two) ✓ 兄と妹がいます
Use と when listing all items, や when giving examples.
Mistake 2: Forgetting など
❌ (Sounds incomplete without など) りんごやみかんを買った
✓ りんごやみかんなどを買った
Usually add など after や lists for natural flow.
Mistake 3: Mixing や and と
❌ 猫や犬と鳥 ✓ 猫や犬や鳥 (all や) ✓ 猫と犬と鳥 (all と)
Be consistent within a list.
Mistake 4: Using や Incorrectly for Actions
❌ 食べるや飲むや ✓ 食べたり飲んだりする
For actions, use 〜たり〜たり instead of や.
Summary
Key Points:
- や means "and" for partial, non-exhaustive lists
- Implies there are more items than mentioned
- Gives examples from a larger category
- Usually paired with など: A や B など
- Structure: [Noun A] や [Noun B] (など)
- Different from と which indicates complete lists
- Use for 2-3 example items typically
- Works in all formality levels
- More natural with など at the end
- Cannot be used for listing actions (use 〜たり〜たり)
