Why Three Systems?

Historical: Kanji came from China (5th century), hiragana evolved from simplified kanji, katakana developed for annotations.

Functional: Each system signals different information:

コーヒーを飲みました。
ko-hi- wo nomimashita.
coffee (katakana) + particle (hiragana) + drink-past (kanji+hiragana)
"I drank coffee."

Looking at this sentence, you immediately know:

  • コーヒー = foreign word (katakana → coffee)
  • を = grammar particle (hiragana)
  • 飲 = main meaning "drink" (kanji)
  • みました = grammar ending (hiragana)
