Adjective Superlatives (一番)

Superlative Overview

Japanese superlatives use 一番 (ichiban) meaning "number one" or "the most." Unlike English, adjectives don't change - just add 一番.

一番 + [adjective]
"the most [adjective]"

一番高い - the most expensive / the highest
一番大きい - the biggest
一番好き - like the most / favorite

Basic Superlative Pattern

Structure

[Group] の中で A が一番 [adjective]

[Group] の中で [Subject] が 一番 [Adjective]
"Among [group], [subject] is the most [adjective]"

クラスの中で田中さんが一番背が高い
"Among the class, Tanaka is the tallest"
