Overview

Japanese has several ways to express "while" or "during":

  • 間に (あいだに - aida ni) - during/while (something happens in that timeframe)
  • 間 (あいだ - aida) - during/while (throughout)

Formation

Verb (ている form) + 間に
Noun + の + 間に

寝ている間に - while/during sleeping
夏休みの間に - during summer vacation

Meaning

Something happens during a timeframe or while something else is happening:

寝ている間に雨が降った
"It rained while I was sleeping"

日本にいる間に富士山を見たい
"I want to see Mt. Fuji while I'm in Japan"

夏休みの間に旅行した
"I traveled during summer vacation"

Key Point

間に emphasizes that something happens within that period - often a completed action or event that occurs during the background action.

Formation

Verb (ている form) + 間
Noun + の + 間

寝ている間 - while sleeping (the whole time)
夏休みの間 - during summer vacation (throughout)

Meaning

Describes a continuous state throughout the period:

寝ている間、ずっと夢を見ていた
"I was dreaming the whole time while sleeping"

日本にいる間、日本語を勉強する
"I'll study Japanese while I'm in Japan" (ongoing)

待っている間、本を読んでいた
"I was reading while waiting" (continuous)

間 vs 間に

間に: Something happens during (point/completion)
寝ている間に電話が来た
"A call came while I was sleeping"

間: Continuous throughout
寝ている間、ずっと静かだった
"It was quiet the whole time while sleeping"

ながら (nagara) - While Doing

Formation

Verb (masu-stem) + ながら

食べながら - while eating
見ながら - while watching
聞きながら - while listening

Meaning

Same person doing two actions simultaneously. The action with ながら is secondary/background:

音楽を聞きながら勉強する
"I study while listening to music"
(listening = background, studying = main)

テレビを見ながら食べる
"I eat while watching TV"
(watching = background, eating = main)

歩きながら話す
"I talk while walking"
(walking = background, talking = main)

Important Rule

Both actions must be done by the same person:

Correct: 私は音楽を聞きながら勉強する ✓
"I study while listening to music"

Wrong with different subjects:
彼が寝ながら、私は勉強する ❌

Comparing the Three

間に (something happens during)

勉強している間に友達が来た
"My friend came while I was studying"
(friend coming = event during studying)

間 (continuous throughout)

勉強している間、静かだった

Common Mistakes

Mistake 1: Using ながら with different subjects

Wrong: 彼が食べながら、私は勉強する ❌
Right: 彼が食べている間、私は勉強する ✓
"While he's eating, I study"

Mistake 2: Wrong verb form with ながら
