〜わけがない (There's no way)

What is 〜わけがない?

〜わけがない (or 〜わけはない) expresses strong denial or impossibility, meaning "there's no way," "it can't be," "impossible," or "it's inconceivable that." It shows you firmly believe something is not true or cannot happen.

彼が嘘をつくわけがない
"There's no way he would lie"

そんなことができるわけがない
"There's no way I can do such a thing"

信じられるわけがない
"There's no way I can believe it"

Formation

Pattern: Plain form + わけがない / わけはない

With verbs:

行く → 行くわけがない (no way will go)
知る → 知るわけがない (no way knows)
できる → できるわけがない (no way can do)

With い-adjectives:

高い → 高いわけがない (no way is expensive)
簡単 → 簡単なわけがない (no way is easy)

With な-adjectives:

便利 → 便利なわけがない (no way is convenient)
本物 → 本物のわけがない (no way is genuine)

Use な/の before わけがない

With nouns:

学生 → 学生のわけがない (no way is a student)
嘘 → 嘘のわけがない (no way is a lie)

Common Mistakes

Mistake 1: Confusing with わけだ

わけだ: That's why/It means
忙しいわけだ
"That's why (you're) busy"

わけがない: There's no way
忙しいわけがない
"There's no way (you're) busy"

Opposite meanings!

Mistake 2: Wrong particle

Wrong: わけをない ❌
Right: わけがない ✓
Or: わけはない ✓

Use が or は, not を!

Mistake 3: Using だ with nouns
