Expressing Opinion

〜わけだ (No wonder)

Learn Japanese わけだ for logical conclusions. Master expressing 'no wonder,' 'that's why,' and 'it means that.'

What is 〜わけだ?

〜わけだ expresses logical conclusions, explanations, or realizations, meaning "no wonder," "that's why," "it means that," or "naturally." It shows understanding of why something is the way it is.

練習したわけだ
"No wonder you improved" (lit: You practiced, that's why)

だから忙しいわけだ
"That's why you're busy"

つまり、できないわけですね
"So that means you can't do it"

Formation

Pattern: Plain form + わけだ

With verbs:

行く → 行くわけだ
行った → 行ったわけだ
行かない → 行かないわけだ

With い-adjectives:

高い → 高いわけだ
高かった → 高かったわけだ

With な-adjectives:

便利 → 便利なわけだ
簡単 → 簡単なわけだ

Use な before わけだ

With nouns:

学生 → 学生というわけだ / 学生なわけだ
問題 → 問題というわけだ

Often use という or な

Main Uses

1. Logical conclusion (No wonder/That's why)

A: 毎日練習してるんだ
   "I practice every day"

B: だから上手なわけだ
   "That's why you're good" / "No wonder you're good"

2. Explaining/Clarifying (It means that)

つまり、来ないわけですね
"So that means you're not coming"

彼は医者だ。だから忙しいわけだ
"He's a doctor. That's why he's busy"

3. Natural consequence (Naturally/Of course)

雨だから、中止になるわけだ
"It's raining, so naturally it's cancelled"

難しいから、時間がかかるわけだ
"It's difficult, so of course it takes time"

Example 1: Understanding

A: 最近、ジムに通ってるんだ
   "I've been going to the gym recently"

B: だから痩せたわけだ!
   "That's why you lost weight!"

A: そうなんだよ
   "Yeah, that's right"

Example 2: Clarifying

A: 彼、来られないって
   "He says he can't come"

B: じゃあ、5人だけというわけですね
   "So that means it's just 5 people then"

A: そういうこと
   "That's right"

Example 3: Realization

A: 彼女、フランス人なんだ
   "She's French"

B: ああ、だからフランス語が上手なわけだ
   "Ah, that's why her French is good"

Common Mistakes

Mistake 1: Confusing with はずだ

はずだ: Expectation based on facts
来るはずだ (he said he would)
"He should come"

わけだ: Logical conclusion/explanation
来るわけだ (that explains why he's coming)
"That's why he's coming"

Different functions!

Mistake 2: Using for personal opinions

Wrong: いいと思うわけだ ❌
Right: いいと思う ✓
"I think it's good"

わけだ is for logical conclusions, not opinions

Use という or な with nouns

Polite Forms

Casual: わけだ

だから忙しいわけだ
"That's why you're busy"

Polite: わけです

というわけだ (That means)

Summarizing/concluding

つまり、できないというわけですね
"So that means you can't do it"

~ないわけだ (That's why...not)

つまり、高品質だから高価格というわけだ。
これは当然の結果と言える。
"This product is high quality. However, the price is also high.
