What is 〜といい?

〜といい (or 〜といいです) expresses wishes, hopes, or gentle suggestions, meaning "it would be good if" or "I hope." It's softer and less direct than other advice patterns.

晴れるといいですね

"I hope you get better soon"

Common Mistakes

Mistake 1: Using た-form

Wrong: 行ったといい ❌
Right: 行くといい ✓
"It would be good if (you) went"

Use dictionary form, not た-form!

Mistake 2: Using for your own wishes

Unnatural: 私が合格するといい ⚠️
Natural: 合格するといい ✓
Or: 合格したい ✓
"I hope I pass"

といい is usually for others' benefit
For yourself, use たい or hope implicitly

Mistake 3: Too indirect for strong advice

When urgent: 医者に行くといいよ ⚠️
Better: 医者に行ったほうがいい ✓
"You should go to the doctor"

といい is too soft for urgent situations!
