Reasons & Causes

〜て (Casual reason)

Learn how to use Japanese て-form to express casual reasons. Master natural, conversational ways to explain why.

What is て as a Reason?

The て-form can express casual reasons or causes, similar to "because" or "and then." It's very natural in spoken Japanese and softer than から.

お腹が空いて、コンビニに行った
"I was hungry, (so) I went to the convenience store"

雨が降って、試合が中止になった
"It rained, (so) the match was cancelled"

嬉しくて、泣いちゃった
"I was (so) happy, I cried"

Formation

Uses standard て-form

Same conjugation as regular て-form

Verbs: Standard て-form conjugation
い-adjectives: Remove い + くて

Basic Usage

Expressing cause and effect

疲れて、眠くなった
"I got tired, (so) I became sleepy"

道が混んでて、遅れた
"The road was crowded, (so) I was late"

忙しくて、時間がない
"I'm busy, (so) I don't have time"

Natural consequences

雨が降って、中止になった
"It rained, (so) it was cancelled"

安くて、たくさん買った
"It was cheap, (so) I bought a lot"

面白くて、最後まで読んだ
"It was interesting, (so) I read to the end"

て-form vs から/ので

て-form - Softest, most natural

嬉しくて、泣いちゃった
"I was happy, (so) I cried"

Casual, conversational
Natural flow

から - Clear causation

嬉しかったから、泣いた
"Because I was happy, I cried"

More explicit reason

ので - Formal/objective

嬉しかったので、涙が出ました
"Because I was happy, tears came out"

With emotions

嬉しくて、泣いた
"(I was so) happy, I cried"

悲しくて、何もできなかった
"(I was so) sad, I couldn't do anything"

怖くて、見られない
"(It's so) scary, I can't watch"

驚いて、声も出なかった
"(I was so) surprised, I couldn't even speak"

With states and conditions

疲れて、眠い
"(I'm) tired, (so) sleepy"

お腹が空いて、力が出ない
"(I'm) hungry, (so) I have no energy"

忙しくて、休めない
"(I'm) busy, (so) I can't rest"

With actions leading to results

勉強して、合格した
"(I) studied, (so/and) I passed"

走って、間に合った
"(I) ran, (so/and) I made it in time"

頑張って、できるようになった
"(I) tried hard, (so/and) became able to do it"

Characteristics

More natural than から in casual speech

More natural: 高くて、買えない
"It's expensive, (so) I can't buy it"

Also correct: 高いから、買えない
"Because it's expensive, I can't buy it"

て sounds more conversational

Shows direct connection

雨が降って、濡れた
"It rained, (and/so) I got wet"

Direct cause → effect
Immediate connection

Cannot be used with commands

Wrong: 危なくて、気をつけて ❌
Right: 危ないから、気をつけて ✓
"It's dangerous, so be careful"

Use から/ので for commands/requests

Common Conversations

Example 1: Explaining Situation

A: どうしたの?顔色悪いよ
   "What's wrong? You look pale"

B: 昨日あまり寝られなくて、疲れてるんだ
   "I couldn't sleep much yesterday, so I'm tired"

A: 大丈夫?
   "Are you okay?"

Example 2: Shopping Story

A: そのバッグ、いいね
   "That bag is nice"

B: うん、デザインが気に入って、買っちゃった
   "Yeah, I liked the design, so I bought it"

A: いくらだった?
   "How much was it?"

Example 3: Daily Life

A: 今日の試合、中止だって
   "Today's game is cancelled"

B: え、なんで?
   "Huh, why?"

A: 雨が降って、グラウンドが使えないんだって
   "It rained, so the field can't be used"

Common Mistakes

Mistake 1: Using with commands

Wrong: 寒くて、窓を閉めて ❌
Right: 寒いから、窓を閉めて ✓
"It's cold, so close the window"

Cannot use て with commands!

Mistake 2: Too casual in formal situations

Too casual: 体調が悪くて、休みます ⚠️
Better: 体調が悪いので、休みます ✓
"I'm not feeling well, so I'll rest"

Use ので in formal situations

Mistake 3: Wrong て-form

Wrong: 高いて ❌
Right: 高くて ✓
"Expensive, so..."

い-adjectives: 高い → 高くて

Expressing Degree

"So... that"

美味しくて、毎日食べてる
"It's (so) delicious, I eat it every day"

面白くて、やめられない
"It's (so) interesting, I can't stop"

難しくて、分からない
"It's (so) difficult, I don't understand"

Shortened Forms in Casual Speech

Dropping particles

Very casual: お腹空いて、コンビニ行った
Standard: お腹が空いて、コンビニに行った
"I was hungry, (so) I went to the convenience store"

Natural in conversation

Using って instead of て

Casual: 高くって、買えない
Standard: 高くて、買えない
"It's expensive, (so) I can't buy it"

って adds emphasis

When NOT to Use て

With volitional/intentional actions as reasons

Unnatural: 日本語を勉強して、日本に来た ⚠️
Better: 日本語を勉強するために、日本に来た ✓
"I came to Japan to study Japanese"

Use ために for purpose

With requests/suggestions following

Unnatural: 疲れて、休んだらどう? ⚠️
Better: 疲れてるから、休んだらどう? ✓
"You're tired, so how about resting?"

Use から for suggestions

With Different Tenses

寒くて、震えてる
"It's cold, (so) I'm shivering"

高くて、手が出ない
"It's expensive, (so) I can't afford it"

Past event → Result

雨が降って、試合が中止になった

Comparing Casualness

Most casual to most formal

1. 高くて、買えない (very casual)
   "It's expensive, can't buy it"

2. 高いから、買えない (casual)
   "It's expensive, so I can't buy it"

3. 高いので、買えません (polite)
   "It's expensive, so I can't buy it"

4. 価格が高いため、購入できません (formal)
   "Due to the high price, I cannot purchase it"
