What is ために?

ために (tame ni) expresses purpose or reason, meaning "in order to," "for the sake of," or "for the purpose of." It indicates the goal or reason for an action.

English equivalents:

日本語を勉強するために日本に来た。
Nihongo wo benkyou suru tame ni Nihon ni kita.
