What is 〜そう (sou) for Observation?

〜そう (observation) expresses your judgment about something based on what you can see or observe right now. It means "looks like" or "seems" when making a visual assessment.

おいしそう
"looks delicious"

Formation

With I-adjectives

Remove い and add そう:

おいしい → おいしそう
"looks delicious"

楽しい → 楽しそう
"looks fun"

難しい → 難しそう
"looks difficult"

Exception: いい (good)

いい → よさそう
"looks good"

With Na-adjectives

Remove だ and add そう:

元気 → 元気そう
"looks energetic/healthy"

便利 → 便利そう
"looks convenient"

静か → 静かそう
"looks quiet"

With Verbs

Add そう to masu-stem:

降る → 降ります → 降りそう
"looks like it will rain"

壊れる → 壊れます → 壊れそう
"looks like it will break"
