What are Question Words?

Question words (疑問詞 - gimonshi) are used to ask for specific information. Japanese has equivalents for the English 5W1H: Who, What, When, Where, Why, and How.

何 (なに/なん) - What
誰 (だれ) - Who
いつ - When
どこ - Where
なぜ/どうして - Why
どう/どのように - How

The Basic Question Words

何 (nani/nan) - What

何ですか？
"What is it?"

何を食べますか？
"What do you eat?"

何時ですか？
"What time is it?"

誰 (dare) - Who

誰ですか？
"Who is it?"

誰が来ますか？
"Who will come?"

誰と行きますか？
"Who will you go with?"

いつ (itsu) - When

いつですか？
"When is it?"

いつ行きますか？
"When will you go?"

いつ来ましたか？
"When did you come?"

どこ (doko) - Where

どこですか？
"Where is it?"

どこに行きますか？
"Where will you go?"

どこから来ましたか？
"Where did you come from?"

なぜ/どうして (naze/doushite) - Why

なぜですか？
"Why is it?"

"Why didn't you come?"

どう (dou) - How

"How is it?"

いくら (ikura) - How much (price)

どの (dono) - Which

どの本ですか？

"Which one is it?"

どちら (dochira) - Which (of two)

どちらがいいですか？
"Which is better?"

どちらから来ましたか？
"Where are you from?" (polite)

Question Word Placement

Question words typically go where the answer would be:

Question: 誰が来ますか？
"Who will come?"

Answer: 田中さんが来ます
"Tanaka will come"

Question: 何を食べますか？
"What will you eat?"

Answer: 寿司を食べます
"I'll eat sushi"

With Particles

Question words combine with particles naturally:

が (subject)

誰が言いましたか？
"Who said it?"

何がほしいですか？
"What do you want?"

を (object)

何を食べますか？
"What do you eat?"

誰を待っていますか？
"Who are you waiting for?"

に (direction/time)

どこに行きますか？
"Where are you going?"

誰に会いますか？
"Who will you meet?"

で (location/means)

どこで買いましたか？
"Where did you buy it?"

何で来ますか？
"How (by what means) will you come?"

と (with)

誰と行きますか？
"Who will you go with?"

何と言いましたか？
"What did you say?"

から (from)

"Where did you come from?"

Multiple Question Words

You can use multiple question words in one sentence:

誰がいつどこに行きますか？
"Who will go where when?"

何をどこで買いますか？
"What will you buy where?"

Example 1: First Meeting

A: お名前は何ですか？
   "What is your name?"

B: 田中です
   "I'm Tanaka"

A: どこから来ましたか？
   "Where are you from?"

B: 東京から来ました
   "I came from Tokyo"

Example 2: Making Plans

A: 週末何をしますか？
   "What will you do on the weekend?"

B: 映画を見に行きます
   "I'll go to see a movie"

A: 誰と行きますか？
   "Who will you go with?"

B: 友達と行きます
   "I'll go with a friend"

Example 3: Shopping

A: これはいくらですか？
   "How much is this?"

B: 1000円です
   "It's 1000 yen"

A: どこで作りましたか？
   "Where was it made?"

B: 日本で作りました
   "It was made in Japan"

Common Mistakes

Mistake 1: Wrong particle

Wrong: 誰を来ますか？ ❌
Right: 誰が来ますか？ ✓
"Who will come?"

Mistake 2: Using か in casual speech

Casual context:
何食べる？ ✓ (no か)
"What will you eat?"

Polite:
何を食べますか？ ✓
"What will you eat?"

Mistake 3: Wrong form of 何

Before です or counter: 何 (なん)
何ですか？ (なんですか)

Before を, が: 何 (なに)
何を食べる？ (なにを)
