What is ので?
ので expresses reasons or causes in a more objective, polite way than から. It means "because" or "since" and is commonly used in polite conversation, business, and formal writing.
時間がないので、失礼します
"I don't have time, so I'll excuse myself"
雨が降っているので、中止です
"Because it's raining, it's cancelled"
忙しいので、後でお願いします
"I'm busy, so please do it later"

Key Differences from から
ので is more objective
ので: States facts, natural consequences
から: Speaker's subjective judgment
雨なので、試合は中止です (objective fact)
"Because of rain, the match is cancelled"
雨だから、行きたくない (personal feeling)
"It's raining, so I don't want to go"
ので is more polite
Polite: 遅れてすみません。電車が遅れたので
Casual: 遅れてごめん。電車が遅れたから
"Sorry I'm late. Because the train was delayed"
Use ので in business/formal settings
ので cannot end a sentence
Wrong: 忙しいので ❌
Right: 忙しいので、無理です ✓
Or: 忙しいから (casual) ✓
から can end sentences, ので cannot!

Common Mistakes
Mistake 1: Using です before ので
Wrong: 学生ですので ❌
Right: 学生なので ✓
Or: 学生でございますので (very formal) ✓
な-adjectives and nouns use な!
Mistake 2: Ending sentence with ので
Wrong: 忙しいので ❌
Right: 忙しいので、無理です ✓
Or: 忙しいから (can end with から) ✓
Need a result clause after ので!
Mistake 3: Too formal for casual chat
To close friends: 疲れたので ⚠️
More natural: 疲れたから ✓
"Because I'm tired"
ので sounds stiff with close friends!
