の (no) Nominalization

Learn Japanese の nominalization to turn verbs and clauses into noun phrases. Master how to use の for abstract concepts and sentence subjects.

What is の Nominalization?

の nominalization turns verbs, adjectives, and entire clauses into noun phrases by adding after the plain form. This is like adding "-ing" in English (e.g., "reading is fun"). The の acts as a placeholder noun meaning "the act of" or "the thing of."

読むのが好き
"I like reading" (Lit: I like the act of reading)

早く寝るのは大切だ
"Sleeping early is important"

彼が来たのを知っている
"I know that he came"

Basic Structure

[Plain form] + の

食べる + の → 食べるの
"Eating / to eat"

難しい + の → 難しいの
"Being difficult / the difficult thing"
