Permission & Obligation

〜なくてもいい (Don't have to)

What is 〜なくてもいい?

〜なくてもいい expresses lack of obligation or that something is not necessary, meaning "don't have to," "don't need to," or "it's okay not to."

Formation

Pattern: Verb negative て-form + もいい

Step 1: Negative form (ない) Step 2: Change ない to なくて Step 3: Add もいい

Common Mistakes

Mistake 1: Wrong negative form

Wrong: 行かないでもいい ❌
Right: 行かなくてもいい ✓
"Don't have to go"

Use なくて, not ないで!

Mistake 2: Confusing with prohibition

なくてもいい = don't have to (no obligation)
てはいけない = must not (prohibition)

Different meanings!

Mistake 3: Using for things you want to prohibit

Wrong: 食べなくてもいい (when you mean "don't eat") ❌
Right: 食べてはいけない ✓
