〜まま (As is/While)

What is 〜まま?

〜まま (mama) expresses doing something while maintaining an unchanged state, or leaving something as it is. It emphasizes that a state continues without change.

English equivalent: "as is," "while staying," "leave as," "without changing"

Structure: [Verb た-form / Noun + の] + まま

座る (suwaru - sit) → 座った + まま = 座ったまま
"while sitting" / "remaining seated"

そのまま (sono mama) = "as it is"

立つ (tatsu - stand) → 立った + まま = 立ったまま
"while standing" / "remaining standing"

Basic Formation

With verb た-form

[Verb た-form] + まま

座ったまま (suwatta mama) - "while sitting"
