Question Patterns

か (ka) Question Usage

Master the Japanese question particle か (ka). Learn when to use it, when to omit it, and special か patterns in different contexts.

What is か (ka)?

か (ka) is the primary question particle in Japanese. It marks a sentence as a question and is roughly equivalent to a question mark, though question marks are also used in writing.

これは本です
"This is a book" (statement)

これは本ですか?
"Is this a book?" (question)

Basic Usage

With です/ます (Polite)

Always use か in polite/formal situations:

学生ですか?
"Are you a student?"

行きますか?
"Will you go?"

わかりますか?
"Do you understand?"

美味しいですか?
"Is it delicious?"

Question Mark Usage

In modern Japanese, both か and ? are often used:

Standard: 学生ですか?
Common: 学生ですか
Also seen: 学生ですか。

All three are acceptable in writing.

When to Use か

1. Polite/Formal Speech

Always use か with です/ます forms:

これは何ですか?
"What is this?"

どこに行きますか?
"Where are you going?"

いくらですか?
"How much is it?"

2. Yes/No Questions

日本人ですか?
"Are you Japanese?"

好きですか?
"Do you like it?"

明日来ますか?
"Will you come tomorrow?"

3. Information Questions

With question words (何、誰、いつ、どこ、etc.):

これは何ですか?
"What is this?"

誰が来ますか?
"Who is coming?"

いつ行きますか?
"When will you go?"

4. Alternative Questions

Between choices:

コーヒーか紅茶ですか?
"Coffee or tea?"

行くか行かないか?
"Going or not going?"

When NOT to Use か

1. Casual Conversation (だ form)

In casual speech with だ, omit か and use rising intonation:

Casual: 学生? (rising intonation)
Not: 学生だか? ❌
Polite: 学生ですか? ✓

Casual: これ何?
Not: これ何だか? ❌
Polite: これは何ですか? ✓

2. With Question Words in Casual Speech

Casual: 誰?
Polite: 誰ですか?

Casual: どこ行く?
Polite: どこに行きますか?

Casual: いつ?
Polite: いつですか?

3. After の in Casual Questions

の acts as a question marker itself:

Casual: 行くの?
Not: 行くのか? (sounds masculine/rough)
Polite: 行くのですか? ✓

Casual: 何してるの?
Polite: 何をしているのですか?

4. With か Already Used

Don't double up:

Wrong: 何ですかか? ❌
Right: 何ですか? ✓

Special か Patterns

かどうか (ka dou ka) - "Whether or not"

Used in indirect questions:

行くかどうかわかりません
"I don't know whether (I'll) go or not"

本当かどうか確認してください
"Please confirm whether it's true or not"

できるかどうか試してみます
"I'll try to see whether I can do it"

彼が来るかどうか聞いてください
"Please ask whether he's coming"

か (embedded questions)

In indirect questions within sentences:

誰が来るか知っていますか?
"Do you know who is coming?"

何時に始まるか教えてください
"Please tell me what time it starts"

どこにあるかわかりません
"I don't know where it is"

いくらかかるか計算しています
"I'm calculating how much it will cost"

か with Counters

For "about/approximately":

3つか4つ
"About 3 or 4"

10分か15分
"About 10 or 15 minutes"

2、3日か
"About 2 or 3 days"

〜か〜か (repetitive か)

Listing alternatives or examples:

誰か
"Someone"

何か
"Something"

どこか
"Somewhere"

いつか
"Someday"

どちらか
"Either one"

〜か〜ないか (affirmative or negative)

行くか行かないか
"Whether to go or not"

食べるか食べないか
"Whether to eat or not"

Formal Business/Written

ご確認いただけますでしょうか?
"Could you please confirm?"

よろしいでしょうか?
"Would that be alright?"

Standard Polite

わかりますか?
"Do you understand?"

行きますか?
"Will you go?"

いいですか?
"Is it okay?"

Casual (omit か)

わかる?
"Understand?"

行く?

Masculine/Rough (のか、んか)

何してんのか?
"What are you doing?" (rough)

どこ行くんか?
"Where are you going?" (dialect/rough)

These forms should be avoided by learners unless you understand the context well.

A: 日本人ですか?
   "Are you Japanese?"

B: いいえ、アメリカ人です
   "No, I'm American"

A: 学生ですか?
   "Are you a student?"

B: はい、そうです
   "Yes, that's right"

A: これはいくらですか?
   "How much is this?"

B: 1000円です
   "It's 1000 yen"

A: 高いですか?
   "Is it expensive?"

   "Free tomorrow?"

B: うん、暇だよ
   "Yeah, I'm free"

With Verbs

食べますか?
"Will you eat?"

行きましたか?
"Did you go?"

見ていますか?
"Are you watching?"

できますか?
"Can you do it?"

With Adjectives

い-adjectives:

美味しいですか?
"Is it delicious?"

大きいですか?
"Is it big?"

高いですか?

な-adjectives:

元気ですか?

誰が来るかわかりません

"I'll try asking when it ends"

With Verbs of Thinking/Knowing

本当かどうか考えています
"I'm thinking about whether it's true"

できるか試してみます
"I'll try to see if I can do it"

正しいかどうか確認してください
"Please confirm whether it's correct"

Regional and Contextual Variations

Kansai Dialect

Often omits か even in polite speech:

Standard: 何ですか?
Kansai: 何ですか → 何です?
"What is it?"

かい (kai) - Masculine/Old-fashioned

元気かい?
"Are you well?" (masculine)

わかるかい?
"Do you understand?" (masculine)

Used mainly by older men or in fiction.

かしら (kashira) - Feminine/Old-fashioned

本当かしら?
"I wonder if it's true?" (feminine)

来るかしら?
"I wonder if they'll come?" (feminine)

Less common in modern speech, sounds dated.

かな (kana) - Wondering

Gender-neutral, modern:

できるかな?
"I wonder if I can do it?"

本当かな?
"I wonder if it's true?"

誰かな?
"I wonder who it is?"

か with Other Particles

かね (ka ne)

Seeking agreement or confirmation:

高いですかね?
"It's expensive, isn't it?"

難しいですかね?
"It's difficult, isn't it?"

そうですかね?
"Is that so?"

かよ (ka yo)

Expressing surprise or disbelief (casual/rough):

本当かよ!
"Really?!" (masculine)

嘘だろう?
"No way, right?"

から (kara) after か

Sometimes seen but redundant:

Less common: 行きますかから
Standard: 行きますか
"Will you go?"

Common Mistakes

Mistake 1: Using か with だ in casual speech

Wrong: 学生だか? ❌
Right: 学生? ✓ (casual)
Right: 学生ですか? ✓ (polite)

Mistake 2: Forgetting か in formal situations

Too casual: 何です (in formal setting) ⚠️
Better: 何ですか? ✓
"What is it?"

Mistake 3: Double か
