Common Humble Verbs

Humble verbs are special kenjougo (謙譲語) forms used to lower your own actions, indirectly showing respect to superiors. Use these verbs when you do something for, to, or in the presence of someone of higher status.

Regular → Humble
行く → 参る "go"
言う → 申す "say"
食べる → いただく "eat"

Essential Humble Verbs

参る (go/come)

行く → 参る "go"
来る → 参る "come"

明日参ります。
"I will go/come tomorrow."

すぐに参ります。
"I'll be right there."

Both go and come

申す/申し上げる (say)

言う → 申す "say"
言う → 申し上げる "say" (more formal)

田中と申します。
"I'm called Tanaka."

一つ申し上げてもよろしいですか。
"May I say one thing?"

存じる/存じ上げる (know)

知る → 存じる "know"
知る → 存じ上げる "know" (about person)

"I know."

差し上げる (give)

あげる → 差し上げる "give"

プレゼントを差し上げます。
"I'll give a present."

"I'm honored to meet you."
