〜はずだ (Should be)

What is 〜はずだ?

〜はずだ expresses logical expectations or reasonable assumptions based on available information, meaning "should be," "supposed to," "ought to," or "is expected to." It indicates what you believe is logical or reasonable.

彼は今日来るはずだ
"He should come today" (based on plan)

これで動くはずです
"This should work" (based on logic)

知っているはずだ
"He should know" (reasonable expectation)

Formation

Pattern: Plain form + はずだ

With verbs:

行く → 行くはずだ (should go)
行った → 行ったはずだ (should have gone)
行かない → 行かないはずだ (shouldn't go)

With い-adjectives:

高い → 高いはずだ (should be expensive)
高かった → 高かったはずだ (should have been expensive)

With な-adjectives:

便利 → 便利なはずだ (should be convenient)
簡単 → 簡単なはずだ (should be easy)

Use な before はずだ

With nouns:

学生 → 学生のはずだ (should be a student)
本物 → 本物のはずだ (should be genuine)

Common Mistakes

Mistake 1: Confusing with だろう

はずだ: Based on facts/logic
来るはずだ (he said he would)
"He should come"

だろう: Probability/guess
来るだろう (probably)
"He'll probably come"

Different bases!

Mistake 2: Wrong particle with nouns

Wrong: 学生はずだ ❌
