Common Mistakes
Mistake 1: Using だけ with Negative Like しか
❌ 水だけ飲まなかった (confusing - sounds odd) ✓ 水だけ飲んだ (positive with だけ) ✓ 水しか飲まなかった (negative with しか)
だけ is typically neutral; use しか for negative emphasis.
Mistake 2: Wrong Word Order
❌ だけこれです ✓ これだけです
だけ follows the word it limits.
Mistake 3: Redundant Particles
❌ 水をだけを飲む ✓ 水だけを飲む or 水だけ飲む
Don't double particles unnecessarily.
Mistake 4: Confusing だけに Meanings
Context determines meaning:
- 高いだけに (precisely because it's expensive)
- 彼だけに (only to him/only for him)
Pay attention to context.
