Numbers & Counters

Counter System Basics

Master the Japanese counter system. Learn how counters work, common patterns, and which counter to use for different objects.

What are Counters?

Counters (助数詞 josūshi) are special words attached to numbers when counting objects, people, or actions in Japanese. Different counters are used based on the shape, size, or type of object being counted.

Without counter: 3 ❌ (incomplete)
With counter: 3つ ✓ "3 items"
3 people"
3 long objects"

Basic Structure

Pattern: Number + Counter

Number + Counter
│ │
"Two people"

"Three long objects"

"Five flat objects"

Why Counters Exist

Counters serve several purposes:

  1. Classify objects by type or shape
  2. Provide clarity about what's being counted
  3. Add specificity to quantities
  4. Follow linguistic patterns similar to Chinese
English: "Three pieces of paper"
(uses "pieces of" as measure word)

Japanese:
(uses 枚 counter for flat objects)

How to Choose the Right Counter

Step 1: Identify the Object Type

Ask yourself:

  • What shape is it?
  • Is it living or non-living?
  • How is it typically measured?

Step 2: Match to Counter Category

Pencil → long, cylindrical → 本
Paper → flat, thin → 枚
Apple → small, round → 個 or つ
Dog → small animal → 匹
Car → machine/vehicle → 台

Step 3: When in Doubt

Use the general counter for objects (works for most things):

りんごを3つください
"Three apples, please"

More specific:

Asking "How Many?"

With Counters

"How many people?"

"How many (long objects) are there?"

"How many (flat objects) do you want?"

General Questions

"How many?" (general, using native numbers)

"How many are there?"
