Comparative Adjectives

Learn how Japanese adjectives work in comparisons. Master comparative and superlative forms with より, のほうが, and 一番.

What are Comparative Adjectives?

Unlike English where adjectives change form (big → bigger → biggest), Japanese adjectives don't change for comparisons. Instead, Japanese uses particles and adverbs like より (than), のほうが (more than), and 一番 (most) to express comparative and superlative meanings.

English: bigger, biggest
Japanese: 大きい (same form always)

Use particles to show comparison
