Conditionals

ば (ba) - If/When (general)

Learn Japanese ば conditional for general conditions. Master expressing 'if' for requirements and hypothetical situations.

What is ば Conditional?

expresses general conditions, requirements, or hypothetical situations. It means "if" or "when" in a general sense, often implying "if X, then Y is possible/will happen."

安ければ、買います
"If it's cheap, I'll buy it"

頑張れば、できる
"If you try hard, you can do it"

時間があれば、手伝います
"If I have time, I'll help"

Formation

With verbs: Change final う sound to え + ば

Irregular verbs

する → すれば
来る → 来れば (くれば)

With い-adjectives: Remove い + ければ

高い → 高ければ (If it's expensive)
安い → 安ければ (If it's cheap)
いい/良い → 良ければ (よければ) (If it's good)
ない → なければ (If there isn't)

With な-adjectives and nouns: + であれば / ならば

静か → 静かであれば / 静かならば (If it's quiet)
学生 → 学生であれば / 学生ならば (If (someone is) a student)
雨 → 雨であれば / 雨ならば (If it's rain)

Often shortened to なら in modern Japanese

Basic Usage

General conditions

時間があれば、行きます
"If I have time, I'll go"

安ければ、買います
"If it's cheap, I'll buy it"

分からなければ、聞いてください
"If you don't understand, please ask"

Requirements/prerequisites

勉強すれば、合格できる
"If you study, you can pass"

頑張れば、夢は叶う
"If you try hard, dreams come true"

練習すれば、上手になる
"If you practice, you'll improve"

Hypothetical situations

お金があれば、旅行したい
"If I had money, I'd want to travel"

もっと時間があれば、もっと勉強できるのに

Cannot use with past tense results

Wrong: 行けば、いなかった ❌
Right: 行ったら、いなかった ✓

Cannot describe past discoveries with ば

Often with potential form

A: この問題が分からないんだけど
   "I don't understand this problem"

B: よければ、教えるよ
   "If you'd like, I'll teach you"

A: 試験、心配だな
   "I'm worried about the exam"

B: もっと勉強すれば、大丈夫だよ
   "If you study more, you'll be fine"

Common Mistakes

Mistake 1: Using with past results

Wrong: 家に帰れば、猫が寝ていた ❌
Right: 家に帰ったら、猫が寝ていた ✓
"When I got home, the cat was sleeping"

Use たら for past discoveries

Mistake 2: Wrong conjugation

Wrong: 行きば ❌
Right: 行けば ✓
"If (you) go"

Change う sound to え, then add ば

Mistake 3: Overusing in casual speech

Too formal: 暇なら、遊ぼう ⚠️
More natural: 暇だったら、遊ぼう ✓
"If you're free, let's hang out"

たら is more common in casual speech
